Our bedrooms are our sacred space. Once we close the door, we leave the world behind.

So why not use these bedroom door painting ideas to customize the entrance to your sanctuary?

Teenagers love to decorate their doors, so do younger children. The thing is, it can be just as much fun to come up with ideas to decorate your bedroom door for adults as well. What’s more, you can be a lot more creative than a sign that declares “Keep Out.”

If you’re looking for bedroom painting ideas, why not include your door?

First Things First!

Before you get started using one of these door decorating ideas, consider what lies beyond your door, in your room. Your bedroom door should accentuate your bedroom painting ideas. Think of your bedroom door as the icing on the cake.

For example, if you want to create a classic princess bedroom for your daughter, maybe she’ll want her door to be straight out of a fairy tale. You can use her favorite characters to adorn her door. Then it’ll be the entrance to her land of enchantment.

Tools of the trade

You’ll need to make sure you have the tools and the right paint before you get started. So here’s a list of supplies to grab.

  • Dropcloth
  • A variety of paintbrush sizes
  • Painter’s Tape
  • Sandpaper
  • Putty Knife
  • Paint Can Opener
  • Paint Stir Stick

You’ll notice that paint isn’t on this list. That’s because you have a few choices where the paint is concerned.

First off, there’s the primer. Although it’s not technically a type of paint, if you’re painting your bedroom door, and it’s wood, you’ll want to use a primer. Using primer helps cover up darker paint, but even more important, it helps the new paint adhere to porous surfaces.

Decide on the finish

Now, in addition to paint color, you also have a choice of matte, enamel, eggshell, satin, or a glossy finish. A matte finish tones down the color, and it’s got a flat, non-shiny surface. This may not be the best choice for young children, because a matte finish is difficult to clean.

A better choice for kids is a flat enamel, which you can easily wipe clean.

Eggshell is a beautiful option because it’s easy to clean and has a slight shine. The thing about eggshell is that you want to make sure you apply it evenly and use a primer for best results.

Then there’s a satin finish, which is an excellent pick for doors and trims because it’s durable and can handle lots of traffic in and out. This may be the perfect choice for your teen’s room.

Finally, if you want a high-gloss finish, choose this one for a dramatic effect. Remember, though — a gloss coating doesn’t hide the dings and bumps underneath the paint. So using glossy paint means you’ll need extra prep time, and you absolutely don’t want to forget the primer.

Color considerations

The psychology of color is something you’ll also want to consider. What we mean is, you should think about how specific colors affect your mood. Even though this bedroom door leads to someone’s personal sanctuary, other people are looking at it from the outside.

So it pays to think about how this door will affect the rest of your decor and ask yourself if that matters. Other than that, colors are a personal preference and should reflect the occupant’s personality.

Bedroom Door Painting Ideas for Children

There are so many possibilities for decorating a child’s door, and picking a favorite color is an excellent place to start. If you’re working on a room for very young children, this is an opportunity to explore colors and color combinations.

Ultimately, the most important consideration is what they enjoy.

Character creation

You can start simple with your plans for young children’s rooms. First, have them pick an eggshell or satin finish paint in their favorite color. Next, they get to choose a stuffed animal or character that represents them.

Now, you simply paint the door a solid color, add a hook, and hang a stuffed character on their door. This is an idea that easily grows with your kid, and can be updated over and over again as they get older!

Theme designs

Of course, you can take this idea a step further with theme designs. Say your kids are a little older and love the story of “The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe” — their bedroom door can become the gateway to Narnia. Think of using a warm brown as the foundation color and go from there.

You can use a combination of paint, hanging stuffed animals and character dolls, stencils, and vinyl to transform the door into a mystical world.

As far as bedroom decorating ideas go, a theme for a kid’s room is likely to revolve around their favorite cartoon characters, animals, or toys. If they love Disney princesses, you may want a pretty pink pastel base for their door.

On the other hand, blue walls, white trim, and a red door make a great combination.

You could use this color combo as the base for a variety of themes including, sports, video games, and anything Americana.

Put your name on it

Kids love having their names on their bedroom door. If you don’t want to paint their name directly on the door, instead make a cute little plaque to hang, it’s up to you.  And no matter which bedroom door theme you choose, their name can always be part of the design.

Our Best Bets for a Teenager’s Bedroom Door

Teenagers may be the first ones who came up with the idea of decorating their bedroom doors. Everyone has seen the classic “Keep Out” sign on the oldest child’s bedroom door. But maybe we can come up with something, well, a little more inviting.

Perhaps they love music.

Are they into sports?

What about travel? Or college?

Musical genius

If your teenager is into music, it’s no doubt that their bedroom painting ideas have less to do with the color of the walls and more to do with the band posters that cover them. In that case, their bedroom door needs to follow suit.

They can brainstorm creations that range from stenciling song lyrics to affixing concert stubs to their door. A combination of text an images create a fun themed door for a teenager’s room.

Sports fan door decor

Being part of a team, whether it’s on the football team, cheerleading squad, track, or even math and chess club, is a huge part of a teenager’s life. Whatever that sport or hobby is, their bedroom door will benefit from any painting ideas that include it.

You can either go with their favorite color and complimentary trim or team colors as the base paint for this bedroom door idea.

The budding artist

What teenager is going to pass up a chance to paint on the walls? If you have an aspiring artist on your hands, here’s an opportunity to let them stretch their creativity and design their own painted bedroom door.

If they want to go graffiti style, you can take the door off the hinges, get them a paper respirator, and set up a place for them in the backyard. They’ll have a blast and feel ownership, you just rocked parenting and decorating — all at once.

Bedroom Door Painting Ideas for Adults

Truthfully, there are probably plenty of adults that already decided on one of the above teenage themes. After all, adults love music, art, and sports too.

However, if you want to settle into a few classic and elegant looks, then we have a couple of lovely options.

Simple and elegant

If your decor is modern and sleek, then a gorgeous white on white bedroom door may be a perfect choice. Here’s an opportunity to experiment with different types of paint. You can use a combination of matte and high-gloss enamel to make those centerpieces really pop.

Makeover for your door

There are lots of different ways to paint doors. But we doubt anyone has more fun than Evan and Katelyn when they give a boring old door a thoroughly modern makeover.

For this idea, you need to remove the door and prep it for the transformation. Clean it, sand it, and use the primer.

Pick up some fancy quarter-inch molding at your local hardware store. Next, you’ll cut it into pre-measured strips. Then glue the molding to your door following your design. Clamp it down and leave it overnight.

Now, Evan and Katelyn used an airbrush to paint their door. But you can use a roller, or an array of brushes, depending on how you want to finish. Go for one color or create an abstract design with multiple colors.

You are only limited by your imagination.

Let’s Do This

Regardless of what final design you choose, it should reflect the person it represents. You don’t have to be a master painter to create a beautiful bedroom door, but having a plan and the right tools are essential.
